Kreuzkümmel wird auch Mutterkümmel, türkischer Kümmel, ägyptischer Kümmel oder römischer Kümmel genannt. Sein lateinischer Name ist „cuminum“ weshalb er auch einfach nur Cumin genannt wird. Kreuzkümmel wird auch in Afrika und dem Nahen Osten oft verwendet. In der asiatischen Küche kommt er vor allem in vielen indischen Masalas vor, aber auch in anderen Ländern findet er sich wieder.
