Bird’s eye chillies are small chillies that have a pointed shape similar to bird’s eyes. They belong to the species Capsicum annuum and are particularly popular in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. There, they are mostly used for curries, salads or sambals, or sometimes eaten plain. They have a medium fruity spiciness of 50,000 to 100,000 Scoville. There are also African Bird’s Eye chillies that are quite similar. However, these belong to the species Capsicum frutescens and are usually available here under the name Piri Piri.
